この世が耐えられないほどの香り

ヨシャパテの時代、ユダはついに芳しい香りを放つ国となりました。彼は父アサのように、また祖先ダビデのように、主を求めました。しかし、その歩みは過去の栄光を盲目的に踏襲する足取りではありませんでした。彼は「ダビデの初めの道」(代下17:3)を歩んだのです。バアルにひざまずかず、ただ唯一の神の御言葉に耳を傾ける新しい道、すなわち心の畑を耕す知恵の道でした。

「彼の心は主の道にいよいよ励みました」（6節）。王の心がこのようにまず天の道の歩みに勇気を得ると、驚くべきことが地上に展開されました。彼は高き所やアシェラ像を取り除くだけにとどまらず、古い雑草を抜いたその場所に御言葉の種をまき始めたのです。領主やレビ人たちをユダ全土に遣わし、律法の書を教えさせました。

それは剣や槍によって成し遂げた富国強兵ではありませんでした。忘れられていた神の息吹、乾ききった魂を潤すいのちの言葉が国中に響きわたると、民の心の畑は良い土へと変えられました。御言葉が大河のように流れると、恐れの影が周辺諸国を覆い、誰もユダを侵すことができませんでした。貢ぎ物が涸れない泉のように流れ込みました。

真の力は軍隊の数にあるのではありません。神の御言葉を持ち、その御言葉に従って生きようとする聖なる渇望こそが最も強力な武器だったのです。今日、私たちは何によって自分の城を築いているでしょうか。ヨシャパテの物語はそっとささやきます。まずあなたの心の畑に真理の種をまきなさい、と。その御言葉が根を張るとき、あなたの人生は世が耐えられないほどの香りを放つ、堅固な平和の都となるのだと。

A Fragrance the World Cannot Contain

In King Jehoshaphat’s day, Judah began to shine with a beautiful fragrance. Like his father Asa and his ancestor David, he sought the Lord. But his faith was not blind tradition; he chose what Scripture calls “David’s first path” (2 Chronicles 17:3). He refused to bow to idols and instead listened to the one true God, breaking the hard ground of his heart to plant God’s Word.

Jehoshaphat’s courage came first from walking with God: “He took delight in the ways of the Lord; his heart was lifted up in God’s path” (v.6). Then amazing things happened. He removed idols and sent teachers across the land to share God’s law. It was not swords that made Judah strong, but the life-giving breath of God. As His Word spread like a river, people’s hearts were changed, and even surrounding nations were filled with awe.

True strength is not in numbers or power, but in a holy desire to live by God’s Word. What are we building our lives on today? Jehoshaphat’s story whispers: Plant God’s truth deep in your heart. When His Word takes root, your life will carry a fragrance of peace and grace that the world cannot contain.
